Rebels Jr. Pro title hunt ends

“I am proud of our student atletes, as they fought hard all the way” states Coach Ray Baxter.  A season with so much promise, record breaking scoring, and incredible defensive stands, ended this past Saturday, December 8th,  as our Jr. Pros lost to the Queens Gladiators 14 to 12.

During the game, Safety #5 Greg Dixon made a punishing hit on a Gladiator ballcarrier, but suffered a serious concussion and was rushed by ambulance to Jacobi Medical Center. “It was definately an NFL type of hit” stated Defensive Coordintor and Assistant Head Coach Kevin Pryor. “When Greg was on the ground and not moving – it was scary. He hit like that all season. This kid is a rock. For him to be on the ground, not moving, it effected the entire team”

Gridiron Elite officials were deeply concerned. HC Baxter accompanied Dixon to Jacobi Medical Center via ambulance. “My concern is always focused on the health and safety of my players. The game was not the focus – Greg was my only concern until I knew he was out of danger. Besides – we’ve coached this team to win all year. It rested on their shoulders. Their leader was down -who was going to step up and make the play ”

It did not take long for that question to be answered as #3 Tyronne Igie, #83 Joe (Speedy) Martin, #44 Duray Gardner, # 10 Chris Johnson, and #55 Phillipe Gordon answered the call – all having big moments down the stretch. The probable game changer was the blocked punt by Gordon, which gave the Rebels one last chance to score with 18 seconds left from the 20 yard line. However, as fate would have it, an errant pass from QB #9 Steve Torres was intercepted at the 10 yard line, and with no time outs to stop the clock, the Gladiators took the victory. Next week, the Gladiators face the East Coast Knights for the right to play in the ECFL Championship Game.

As a follow up – Greg Dixon is expected to make a full recovery, and may play in the ECFL All Star Classic in January 2008.
