Rebel Training Goals – Week  III

Now, that you have read the preliminaries –(you did read weeks one & two, right? If not do it now!) the time has come to begin training. Make sure you see your doctor before you begin this or any training regiment. We are not responsible for injuries received by following this program. Make sure you have at least two training partners and you continually watch and correct one another. Just as on the field, it is not the amount of weight you lift, but the technique applied as you become stronger and faster. This segment will only detail objectives, and what we are seeking in 2008. Remember, you  must continue to maintain good grades while incorporating this or any other training. You only improve through discipline and training.

(THE TRAINING DESCRIBED HERE ONLY APPLIES TO THOSE PLAYERS THAT ARE OF HIGH SCHOOL AGE)

The Gridiron Elite off season training should have the following objectives:

1)      Reduce the susceptibility to injuries

2)      Increase strength, power, and speed

3)      Increase endurance

4)      Increase flexibility

5)      Increase confidence

 Evaluations

These exercises will be used to evaluate athletes and measure performance in the areas of strength, power, and endurance:

Vertical Jump

Measuring the displacement of standing height vs jumping height – evaluating the power of the lower body region.

Bench Press

Rookies – should be able to max at least 180 lbs.

Veteran Players – Linemen and Linebackers – max at 250 lbs

Skill Players- max at 200 lbs

 Parallel Squats

Rookies – 250 lbs

Veteran  Players – Linemen and Linebackers – max at 300

Skill Players  - max at 275

Two Mile Run and 110 x 10 Sprint Strides

All athletes should be able to complete a two mile run, then with a 10 minute cool down, perform 10 -110 yard strides with a sixty second recovery after each stride. Strides must be completed in 30 seconds.

Abdominal Crunches

100 crunches with one rest for 10 seconds

Since we are now in the off season – your routine should be high volume and intensity. Include skipping rope, and playing full court basketball, and rope speed training (follow the route we normally run during the season  - Ikie Shuffle – Ali Shuffle – 1 and 2 ft drills, etc.)

Also – determine your one rep maximum for the aforementioned exercises – this will help to determine the amount of weight you will actually use to obtain muscle failure, safely.  We will give you percentages of your RM (repetition maximum) to use. You may adjust your percentages of  the RM depending on your performance. For example – if you are benching 300 lbs as your RM, during training you will rep a percentage of your RM – light range being 65% 8 to 12 reps,  medium range being 75% @ 5 to 8 reps, and heavy range being 90% at 1 to5 reps.

Finally, and probably the most important skill set in off season training – BREATHING!!! During resistance training, you will be tempted to hold your breath. This increases pressure in your abdominal area, stops blood flow to vital organs, and can suddenly raise or lower your blood pressure. All of which are bad. Make sure to breathe in when lowering the resistance, and breathe out when raising the resistance.

Next week – the off season routine – lower and upper body exercises. Have a great week.

REMEMBER – REBEL POWER IS DOMINNANT AND REBEL PRIDE IS FOREVER!!!

Training Tips – Week 2

RUN, RUN RUN

If you know anything about Rebel football, and the vaunted Rebel Wing-T,  you know the Rebels are a run first, run second, run third, and possibly pass fourth program. We have been successful because of our running game, but moreso because our athletes are in better shape than other programs. If you wish to compete on a high level within our program, you must create a regimen of exercise and eating healthy in the off season, and continue into the playing season. Running is a big part of that regimen. See your doctor before starting your off season training. Create a routine of running and exercise, incorporate running at least three days per week in your local parks on soft surfaces (i.e. – new running tracks). Include prints in your routines. Next week – we begin specific exercises and training tips per position.

See you next week…

2008 Training Goals – Week One

WHAT WILL BE YOUR TRAINING GOALS FOR 2008??

Every week, there will be a training tip relating to academics, speed, strength,  conditioning and endurance.

This weeks tip relates to personal vision. How do you see yourself, in your mind’s eye.  Henry David Thoreau stated ” I know of no more encouaging fact than the unquestionable ability of man to evelate  his life by conscious endeavor.”   If this past season you made excuses about not completing homework assignments, not coming to practice, being late for work, or you were very critical of others, not making plays, and giving excuses for lack of execution, then you were not effective for your teammates, or yourself.  Take the time to make small commitments to yourself and keep them for 30 days. Be proactive and become part of the solution, not the problem.  Be responsible for your own effectiveness. By changing this habit, you will change your life, and possibly obtain the rewards you seek.  This is how a CHAMPION begins his journey. Become a Rebel Champion.

See you next week!! Have a Happy New Year.
